      At the time of his attestation on 5 May, 1916 he was a clerk working for the Union Steamship Co. His next of kin was his mother, Hannah Race, of the Farmers Arms Hotel, Dunedin. He disembarked at Davenport on 25 October, 1916 and was transferred to Sling Camp. On 10 December he arrived at Etaples in France where he served in the 16th Specialist Signals Section. On 23 February, 1917 he was taken to hospital sick. He rejoined the battalion on 7 March. From 30 November he was hospitalised several times, rejoining his unit in between times. After a period of leave in England in July, he returned to France but had another period of illness, eventually spending from 15 August, 1918 to 26 September in a venereal hospital. He rejoined his unit in the field until he was returned to the UK on 14 January, 1919. However he spent from 28 March to 16 June in hospital being treated for VD. He returned to New Zealand on the Somerset on 2 July, 1919 (military records).
    • Fatal Motor Accident. Young Man Killed. Inquest Adjourned. Late on Friday night a party of four young men, with the driver of the car, were motoring along the Tomahawk road, when in attempting to turn at the bend of the road, just above the Tomahawk Lagoon bridge, the car ran over the bank, which is fairly steep at that spot, and after crashing through a wire fence, overturned at the bottom. As a result one of the passengers, a young single man named Arthur Henderson, a dairy farmer residing at Tomahawk, was killed. The other passengers were Robert Britton (who was in the front seat with the driver), George Thomas Peter Race, and Harold John Tyrie ? (Otago Daily Times, Issue 17796, 1 December 1919, Page 4).
    • George also enlisted during World War 2. At the time of this attestation, on 5 August, 1940, he was a tram driver and had 5 children under 16. He served in the National Military Reserve in Dunedin from 11 November, 1941 to 18 July, 1942. At the time of his discharge he lived in 41 Bathgate Road, Dunedin (military records).
